Daughter of Smoke and Bone 4.5/5 stars
Days of Blood and Starlight 5/5 stars
I listened to both of these books through Audible and it found the voice actor so engaging. It was so engaging that I couldn't stop talking about it (I'm pretty sure that my sister now knows the entire plot of the book without ever reading it š). I actually loved it so much I started listening to the audiobook again after I finished it.
The voice actor really gave a textured experience as she changed her accent and voice slightly for each character. It really brought out the humour of the book too.
The only reason that Daughter of Smoke and Bone is not 5/5 stars is that I had a slight problem with the development of the relationship between the main character Karou and her love interest Akiva. This was because I really don't like love at first sight trope and I never really have. That's just my personal preference though I have seen other reviews that say it makes it kinda adorable.
Eventually, I became more ok with this trope as it is something that is more understandable later in the book.
Other than the love at first sight thing the characters themselves were AMAZING. They all seemed so real and nothing came across as forced. Most of the characters are really likeable and that makes it so much easier to enjoy.
When I started Days of Blood and Starlight I did have doubts that it would be as good as the first book. We all know that in many trilogies the second book is usually not as good as the first but Days of Blood and Starlight is definitely not one of those.
After the end of Daughter of Smoke and Bone, I thought that there were only a few different ways that the plot could go and it seemed to follow my expectations to start with.
BUT...as it got further and further into the book the plot changed completely.
The plot twist in this book was completely unexpected to me. It was so unexpected that I had to stop listening to it for 5 minutes or so just to process what had happened. This plot twist is also one of the main reason that I felt that I couldn't give it less than 5 stars.
The amazing high fantasy elements were also so brilliant and interwoven so seamlessly. This is truly a great book for anyone trying to get into high fantasy just because of the transition between the urban and high fantasy you almost don't notice happening.
Based on these two books I think that this trilogy will definitely be on my list of favourite series of all time if the last book is just as good as the first two. But I'm sure it will be.
